ABOUT

My name is Creighton Tynes. I own and operate Tynes Signs. I am a sign painter and type designer based out of Coker, Alabama. I make signs of all kinds. Every letter is special and I hope I can make some just for you.

I got into lettering when I was learning cursive in grade school. My grandmother showed me how to write the letter "Z" and I was hooked, but somehow my dad convinced me I needed to be an engineer. After a handful of years working in heavy industry I was able to join the Magic City Mural Collective in Birmingham, which led me to start Tynes Signs and begin to focus on the craft of sign painting.

My passion is brush lettering and type design, but I design signs & logos, paint murals, fabricate signs, and even do a bit of creative coding from time to time.

I really enjoy a creative challenge and helping my clients achieve their aesthetic vision, but most of all I want my work to help my client's businesses thrive and grow from the attention that quality work will bring.

THE CRAFT

BRUSH LETTERING

Driving a paintbrush is one of my favorite things to do & Single stroke letters are no joke. It takes precision, patience, and practice alongside a deep understanding of letterforms to master the mechanics of the brush.

WALL WORK & MURALS

All terrain all the time. We go where vinyl and print cannot, and it still looks good after years in the sun. Yes, vinyl has its place, but paint ages with grace. When you invest with paint the return on investment sticks.

GOLD LEAF & GILDING

Gilded signs are truly rare today. Nothing shines quite like gold. Weather reverse on a window, or burnished bright on on a panel, light dances across and adds a little twinkle to all eyes that catch a glimpse.

TYPE DESIGN

SIGN PAINTING INFLUENCES TYPE AND VISE VERSA. I REALLY ENJOY CREATING TYPE FOR USE IN MY SIGNS. I can even create custom type for use in your own projects.

COMMUNITY

Part of keeping this trade alive is passing it on. I try to make sign painting as accessible as I can to anyone who's curious. The craft gets better when more people care about it. I know what I know today because of the generous sharing of knowledge from other craftspersons.
